Dear Beat Church Community,

One of our attendees vandalized the elevator at the JCC last Tuesday, 4/15. As a result, we are unfortunately unable to gather for Beat Church on 4/22 while the JCC conducts their investigation into this matter.

We are deeply saddened by this event. The JCC has been a welcoming space for our community to gather, open our hearts, and share in the joy of movement. To have that space disrespected is painful, especially when we know that our time together is meant to help us heal not only ourselves but also contribute to healing in the world. In that vain we are not focusing on trying to find out whodunit, rather placing energy on the larger collective concern that this highlights in our dance community.

We recognize that the current situation in Palestine and Israel is a source of intense pain and division, both globally and locally. The challenges our world faces can sometimes feel overwhelming, but we ask that as a community, we approach these struggles with open hearts and minds. It’s crucial that we do not allow the complexities of the global crisis to divide us at home, especially in spaces that offer us healing and unity, like our Beat Church gatherings.

We are hopeful that we can return to the JCC on 4/29 (and thereafter) with a renewed commitment to respect, understanding, and shared purpose. Our intention is not only to continue dancing but to use this time to reflect on how we can each contribute to a more compassionate, united community—one that embraces all our struggles, local and global, as well as our differing beliefs and values.

We understand that this situation is sensitive, and that’s why we are turning off comments on this post. Social media is not the place for these deeper conversations. Instead, we plan to host a short discussion in place of the movement lab when we meet again, so we can come together, share perspectives, and grow as a community.

Please note that there are no other alternative venues available in Central Asheville that suit Beat Church’s unique needs, and we ask that you set the intention for us to return to this beautiful space with more awareness and respect. We believe that by working through this together, we can emerge stronger, united, and more connected to each other and the world.

Thank you for your understanding and support during this time. We are grateful for this community and the opportunity to continue our shared journey of love, dance, and growth.

With respect,

Audree
