DJ Q&A with DJ Ujjayi

How did you get into DJing?

I was performing live electronic shows in Portland, OR years ago, and had a style of music in mind for the openers, but I couldn’t find a DJ that had the music I was looking for. Then I realized that I had all the music I was looking for, just not the equipment! I bought the DJ equipment I needed, taught myself how to DJ, and people loved my sets – and DJ Ujjayi was born!

How do your sets at Beat Church differ from other sets you play around town?

My sets at Beat Church are more gritty, bass heavy, and hip hop focused to represent the Beat Church vibes. At other local shows I play more uptempo tracks that include D&B and House.

What do you hope the dancers experience when dancing to one of your Beat Church sets?

I hope the dancers experience their emotions flowing through their bodies through physical movements leading them to positive transformation and finding joy! I also hope for the participants to hear new music that inspires their movement because they’re hearing it for the first time.

Listen to DJ Ujjayi here:

Lab/Movement Class at 6:55-7:15p:

My Dance, Our Dance with Audree

In this movement lab, we will explore what it means to bring our own personal dance into a partner dance to include connection, self expression, sharing the lead role, flow, turns/spins, Contact Improv and lifts.

No partner dance experience necessary, but come ready to dance with others.
