Movement Lab

Authentic Movement with Rhiannon

Join us, in going deeply into ourselves, as both a Mover and a Witness, with Authentic Movement.  Authentic Movement is a self-directed, expressive, improvisational movement process, which uses the wisdom of the body as a pathway to awareness.  It was started by Mary Starks Whitehouse in the 1950s as the dancer’s response and reflection of the Jungian movement.  Also called “Movement in Depth” and “Active Imagination in Movement,” Authentic Movement invites descent into the inner world of the psyche through natural movement.

With an intentional structure, and mostly silent space, this series explores the relationship between our Self and the Internal and the External Witness.  Each week of the series will offer a different prompt to guide our movement exploration and to offer a spectrum of experience to deepen our relationship with our sensing, feeling, body: details to come.  This series will provide us with the time to slow down, listen deeply to ourselves, clearly communicate with one another, and BE MOVED!

Key aspects and types of movement in the approach of Authentic Movement include:
    •    Internal Impulse/Sensation: Movement starts from within, developing as a direct result of physical sensations, emotions, or imagery rather than choreography.
    •    The Mover’s Experience: Participants (Movers) may experience stillness, gentle movement, or expressive dance, following the body’s urge to move without a predetermined plan.
    •    The Witness’s Role: A witness watches with non-judgmental, present attention, creating a “safe space” or “container” for the mover’s expression.
    •    “I and Thou” Relation: The interaction between the mover, the witness, and the space between them (the “third element”), which can lead to transpersonal or shared experiences.
    •    Integration Activities: Sessions often conclude with drawing, writing, or speaking to process the movement experience.

No previous experience is necessary—only curiosity, comfortable clothes, and a bit of courage to open to unknown.

Rhiannon Burk / Serenity Calypso (she / they / fae), invites us to dive into the pleasure that is found in the depths of our creative centers, to embody the pearls of wisdom, and to bring them to light.

She is passionate about developing and sustaining avenues for empowerment and co – creation, in support of community transformation, equity, and well – being. They value the use of movement as medicine, as teacher, and as creative and emotive expression. She believes that there are endless creative avenues to healing, and that she has found this in dance and movement, a playground of embodiment and mindfulness.
